Data Governance & POPIA

POPIA compliance and data governance services

Know what data you hold, who can see it and how you'd respond to a breach, backed by real technical controls rather than policy documents alone.

Last updated

In short

We help South African organisations comply with POPIA in practice, not just on paper: data mapping, gap assessments, access controls, retention and breach readiness. It suits organisations preparing for Information Regulator scrutiny or recovering from an incident. Delivered remotely and on-site.

The problem

Why this matters in South Africa

POPIA requires organisations to secure personal information, limit its use and report breaches to the Information Regulator. Many businesses have policies on paper but no idea where personal data actually sits.

Governance is often treated as a legal exercise. In practice it's technical: classification, access, retention and monitoring.

FAQ

POPIA compliance consulting: common questions

The Information Regulator can issue enforcement notices and administrative fines of up to R10 million, and some offences can lead to criminal prosecution. The reputational damage after a breach is often the bigger cost.

Yes. Every organisation that processes personal information has an Information Officer, by default the head of the organisation. They must be registered with the Information Regulator through its eServices portal.

Contain it, work out what personal information was affected, and notify the Information Regulator and the affected people as soon as reasonably possible, as section 22 of POPIA requires. Breaches are reported through the Regulator's eServices portal.

Yes. The Regulator has moved from raising awareness to enforcement, issuing enforcement notices and fines. In late 2025 it also started a compliance monitoring exercise that asks selected organisations to submit a POPIA compliance report within 14 business days.

Yes. Section 72 only allows personal information to be sent outside South Africa under certain conditions, such as the recipient being bound by adequate data protection laws or agreements. Keeping data in South Africa is often the simplest option.

Most organisations must have a PAIA manual that explains how people can request access to records, and keep it up to date. The Regulator checks this, so it's worth reviewing yours alongside your POPIA compliance.

No. We focus on the technical side of POPIA - data, systems and controls - and work alongside your legal advisers.

A review of your systems and practices against POPIA's requirements, resulting in a prioritised list of improvements.
